The primary focus for this engineering job is to provide optical fiber splicing product developmental and customer support to customers in the OEM market space; thus enhancing AFLâs Fusion Splicer Systems ! sales opportunities and long term profitability. This involves determining near and long-term customer & market needs for product features, splicing methods & processes, and splicing parameters, and implementation of solutions to meet those needs.
0Inthe Specialty (factory/laboratory) Market most engineering developmental activity will focus on emerging and cutting-edge splicing applications involving large diameter fibers (including non-circular fibers, double-clad fibers, etc.), fiber lasers, splicing of âholeyâ (micro structured) fibers, oil & gas applications, military & medical fiber applications, fiber sensors and the like. Job responsibilities and activities will involve developing methods, procedures, tooling, splicing parameters, test methods, equipment performance reports, and identification of needed splicer enhancements and features.
Customer support and visits
General technical sales support
Investigation and documentation of custo! mer and market needs
Customer assistance at customer locat! ion to help implement processes and technical solutions to meet customer needs or challenges.
Equipment Performance reports based on requirements from customers and trade shows
Customer and AFL associate training
Preparation of documents (white papers, M&Ps, operatorsâ manuals, presentations, specifications, training materials)
Providing engineering assistance to the AFL Fusion Splicing Systems Technical Services group for their activities involving splicer product repair & troubleshooting, and general customer support
Providing communication of activities and market needs within AFL as well as providing such insights to the Fujikura splicer team in Japan
Bachelorâs degree in Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, Physics or equivalent, demonstrated work experience.
5+ years of industry specific work experience.
Fiber optic component fabrication background a must. This may include fiber optics theory, fiber test and measurement, an! d process development. Previous experience with design and/or development or production of fiber lasers, fiber amplifiers, fiber components (combiners, couplers, side pumps, etc.), and/or optical fiber splicing.
Strongly proficient using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
Highly effective/strong communication skills (oral and written).
> 25% travel may be required.
Desired but Not Required
Knowledge of mechanical tooling design, software macro generation, or fiber optic component packaging.
