The purpose of the class is to ensure that residential and commercial building construction complies with applicable building mechanical, electrical, an! d plumbing codes; to make responsible decisions on determinations of hazardous or substandard conditions for existing structures; and to perform related technical and administrative work as required. This class works according to some procedures but decides how or when to do things; work is reviewed regularly by supervisor.
Duties:
Performs routine to moderately-complex inspections and enforcements of site development, building, electrical, gas, mechanical, plumbing, and fire prevention codes. Investigates and enforces all adopted regulatory codes and ordinances pertaining to building construction; such as mechanical, electrical, and plumbing codes. Determines residencesâ compliance with applicable building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing codes. Performs daily inspections as assigned making determinations of hazardous or substandard conditions for existing structures and compliance of building codes and ordinances. Prepare and maintain inspection! reports for each complaint and county ordinances violation, a! nd issues notices of correction. Reviews and approves all permit applications; directs and assists in the issuance of building permits and contractor licenses. Performs duties in relation to new ordinances and amendments that reflect new codes or requirements. Prepares a variety of studies, reports and related information for decision-making purposes. Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns, complaints and requests for assistance regarding areas of responsibility. Attends training, conferences, meetings, etc., to enhance job knowledge and skills and maintain certifications. Performs general administrative / clerical work as required, including preparing reports and correspondence, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, attending and conducting meetings, etc. All County employees are considered public servants for the citizens of Dorchester County. When requested before, during, or after an emergency event, County employees are expected to ! work and serve the public in coping with the emergency.
Qualifications:
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION : Requires high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by formal training, special courses or self-education that is equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education or specialized advanced training in construction, construction inspection, code enforcement or a closely related field. SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES : Must possess a valid state driverâs license. Must possess building codes enforcement license and be state certified as an inspector. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS : Requires over one year and up to and including two years.
