This position is assigned to Radiology Service which will serve as staff ultrasonographer and diagnostic radiographer.

The Ultrasound Technologist coordinates a variety of technical procedures that require independent judgment, ingenuity and initiative in the application of non-ionizing high frequency ultrasonic waves to humans for diagnosis of disease in the clin! ic. Will perform duties as radiologic technologist.

TOUR OF DUTY: 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday-Friday. Will be required to take call.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified candidates in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, of this part.)

Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R).

Experience or Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT), and certifi! cation by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in r! adiology..

Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and be certified as radiographers in their field.

English Language Proficiency. Diagnostic Radiologic Technologists must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, of this part.

GRADE REQUIREMENTS:
To be eligible for consideration, you must have a minimum of 4 years working experience as Registered Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist with a (ARRT) certification.
Diagnostic Ultrasound (Sonography) (S). Diagnostic ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves and other diagnostic techniques for medical purposes. The practitioner must be competent in the production, use, recognition, and analysis of ultrasound images and patterns used for patient diagnosis and treatment. The sonographer is regarded as the expert source of all ultrasound imaging, and the interpreting radiologist relies heavily on the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the sonographers in providing a final interpretation. Within this specialization there is a diverse range of ultrasound imaging sub-specialties. These include: 1) diagnostic medical sonography - abdominal, neurologic, obstetrical/gynecologic, and ophthalmic; 2) cardiac sonography - adult and pediatric echocardiography; and 3) vascular technology - vascular and related organs.

Completion of 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-08) directly related to! the position being filled, and fully meets the knowledge, skills, and a! bilities (KSAs)at that level and shown below: In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):

  • 1 Ability to balance the needs of the patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures;
2. Skill to demonstrate appropriate techniques to gather relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers;

  • 3. Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure;
4. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography;

5. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous skills, and universal precautions; and

6. Knowledgeable in pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.

Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as standing for long periods of time, sitting and bending over equipment, light to moderate lifting and can be extremely stressful.
