The Community Director is a full-time, live-in professional staff member of University Housing and Dining, within the Division of Student Affairs. He/she is administratively responsible for a residential area that includes approximately 600-1000 students. The Community Director is the primary facilitator in the development of a residential environment for learning. He/she is supported by 1-2 Graduate Community Directors, 15-35 Resident Assistants, and up to 25 Desk Assistants. The Community Director is involved in policy development and implementation for both University Housing and Student Affairs. He/she serves as the primary communication line between staff.

SUPERVISION: E/30%

GRADUATE COMMUNITY DIRECTOR (GCD)--(LIVE-IN STAFF, GRADUATE ASSISTANTS)

a. Review job responsibilities and duties

b. Identify position related expectations

c. Provide ongoing training and development opportunities

d. Assign tasks and monitor progress

e. Motivate staff members to ensure timeliness and efficiency

f. Facilitate weekly staff meetings

g. Hold weekly One on Ones

h. Provide resources and support in the supervision of Resident Assistants and Desk Assistants

i. Provide accountability to staff members who fail to meet University Housing expectations

j. Monitor academic progress

RESIDENT ASSISTANT (RA)(15-35 RESIDENTS WHO LIVE WITHIN A COMMUNITY)

a. Provide co-supervision for staff with Graduate Community Director(s)

b. Follow-up with staff regarding curriculum requirements

c. Plan and implement weekly staff meetings

d. Facilitate completion of room condition forms and rosters

e. Serve as a resource for room changes and other counseling situations

f. Hold regular one-on-ones with RAs

g. Provide accountability to staff members who fail to meet Residential Life expectations

h. Support RAs in their academic progress

DESK ASSISTANT (DA)(UP TO 25)

a. Manage desk scheduling, hiring, training, and expectations with the assistance of the GCD

b. Hold accountable to departmental expectations and policies regarding desk function

c. Provide accountability to staff members who fail to meet Residential Life expectations

STAFF DEVELOPMENT: E/10%

RECRUITMENT

a. Recruit students for RA positions on an annual basis

b. Assist with Resident Assistant Selection Process

c. Assist with Graduate Assistant Selection Process

TRAINING

a. Assist in the development and implementation of training workshops conducted for all Residential Life staff prior to and during the academic year

b. Present topics to graduate staff during ongoing training and development

c. Provide intentional professional development for graduate staff

d. Foster a supportive and challenging inclusive environment

e. Provide resources for and help facilitate orientation sessions for new RA?s

EVALUATION

a. Conduct formal evaluations of GCDs performance once a semester through a written appraisal and evaluation meeting

b. Complete evaluation and performance appraisals of RAs once per semester

c. Make decisions regarding RA requested reappointment for returning staff

d. Consistently implement the progressive discipline model to hold staff accountable to applicable job performance.

EDUCATIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS

a. Assist with curriculum development and instruction of EDC 390 Student Development, Leadership, and Counseling for the University Paraprofessionals for enrolled RA?s

b. Provide feedback through grading and individual conversations

c. Prepare lesson plans and course documents for each class

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT: E/10%

COMMUNITY COUNCIL/RHA

a. Ensure that Community Council elections are conducted according to established procedures

b. Monitor Community Council programming budgets and tracking

c. Support RHA and Community Council events and meetings through regular attendance

d. Serve as Residential Life resource to Community Council

e. Create inclusive communities that support social justice

RESIDENTIAL EDUCATION

a. Demonstrate a baseline knowledge and understanding of concepts, definitions, philosophy, and departmental priorities relating to social justice, inclusivity, and diversity.

b. Collaborate with academic and student affairs partners to meet student needs

c. Provide dedicated focus and attentiveness to retention efforts for all students

d. Implement residential curriculum as designated by the department

e. Be knowledgeable of needs for student population in areas served

f. Provide resources for academic success

ACADEMIC INITIATIVES

a. Provide day-to-day management of Living-learning communities (LLCs) within area of responsibility

b. Communicate appropriately with LLC partners regarding needs and assistance for LLC

c. Collaborate with Assistant Director(s) regarding evaluation of needs for long-term LLC development

d. Develop a baseline knowledge of assessment information and practices at Clemson University; including management of Campus Labs

e. Assist with implementation of the New Student Academic Program process for all first-year and transfer students, as applicable.

CRISIS MANAGEMENT/DUTY RESPONSIBILITIES: E/15%

COUNSELING

a. Receive, review, investigate and follow up on written reports from student staff regarding individuals with emotional, psychological, or other concerns

b. Advise GCD's and RA's in dealing with individuals regarding emotional, psychological, or other concerns

c. Intervene with students experiencing difficulties and assess the nature and extent of critical situations

d. Refer students to other campus resources as needed

e. Mediate roommate conflicts that have not been resolved by RA or GCD staff

f. Assist Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) with crisis management, and implementation of programs related to crisis management

DUTY

a. Serve as a weekly, twenty-four hour, on-call resource for campus of 6,000 students on a rotational basis as part of a professional staff duty rotation

b. Provide nightly assistance to staff members within specific residential area

c. Assist Police, Fire, and other University Departments as needed within specific residential area

SAFETY & SECURITY

a. Identify safety and security issues in residential area and respond to student concerns by promptly addressing issues and concerns

b. Assist in the development and enforcement of Clemson University and University Housing safety and security policies and procedures

c. Ensure student staff perform twice a semester safety inspections of all rooms

d. Report and follow up on student injuries, major illnesses, arrests, and judicial incidents

e. Collaborate with University Fire Department to coordinate fire drills each semester

f. Distribute safety and security related information to residents

g. Promote positive working relationship between University Police, student patrol, and Residential Life student staff members

h. Assist with training GCD, RA, and desk staff regarding policies and procedures for the card access system

i. Develop and implement a plan to educate residents regarding use of card access system

j. Assist with troubleshooting situations regarding the card access system

HOUSING ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT: E/10%

MAINTENANCE

a. Monitor student maintenance needs and concerns

b. Follow up on emergency requests related to community facilities

c. Assess building needs and address accordingly

d. Investigate, address, and bill responsible parties for common area damages

e. Communicate damages or concerns with Residential Facilities personnel

f. Formulate and recommend facilities-related changes

CUSTODIAL

a. Monitor student custodial needs and concerns

b. Coordinate cleaning of rooms with Residential Facilities during the room change process

c. Collaborate with custodial supervisors to address emergency cleaning situations

d. Assess building needs with regard to custodial care and address accordingly

e. Formulate and recommend custodial-related changes

ASSIGNMENTS

a. Manage assignment information, as appropriate, in TRIBUO

b. Train GCD's, RA's, and DA's to use TRIBUO and serve as resource for related questions

c. Investigate crisis and conflict situations related to roommate assignments and room/apartment change requests

d. Assist other housing professionals with locating available space to assign students in need

e. Manage regular resident room/apartment change requests and resident temporary relocations

BILLING

a. Facilitate room inspections and process all Room/Apartment Condition Forms

b. Investigate damage to determine individual(s) responsible for damages

c. Complete billable damage process as outlined by department

BUDGETS

a. Manage and approve staff budgets for GCD and RA's

b. Distribute RA programming funds

c. Appropriate funds for staff development

d. Manage funding reconciliation paperwork

e. Appropriate stewardship of the purchasing card

COMMUNITY AND ETHICAL STANDARDS: E/10%

HEARING OFFICER RESPONSIBILITIES

a. Act as an administrative hearing officer for University Housing violations and cases reported by CUPD

b. Effectively follow judicial administrative process to ensure the timely and accurate resolution of discipline reports

c. Address the developmental needs of students when conducting judicial hearings

d. Counsel students on matters related to student conduct and provide options for case resolution

e. Implement sanctions and monitor progress of students related to administrative cases

f. Ensure staff understand, uphold, and enforce University policies and procedures

g. Consult with OCES on judicial cases when necessary

h. Attend judicial hearings as a witness for the University as necessary

i. Serve on judicial hearing boards as necessary

j. Train GCD's and RA's in regard to University policies and procedures, judicial process, and documentation procedures.

DEPARTMENTAL ASSIGNMENTS: E/15%

COMMITTEES

a. Serve on department, division, or university committees as directed

b. Opportunity to advise student organizations, such as RHA, NRHH, RAAB, etc.

SUMMER RESPONSIBILITIES

Summer Operations, as a major revenue-generating business, entails the assignment of the Coordinator

during summer months to work with Summer School housing, Summer Orientation, Summer conferences and camps.

From May to August, provide oversight to conferences, camps, and Summer School:

a. Work in small teams to co-facilitate supervision of student staff in joint communities

b. Meet with clients to set up/arrange logistics for camps/conference

c. Be present at check in and check outs for groups

d. Be available to work non-traditional hours during summer to accommodate Saturday/Sunday check in and check outs

e. Maintain correspondence with Associate Director of Conference Operations to ensure proper billing and troubleshoot concerns

f. Serve in on-call rotation for response to camp issues

g. Recruit, select, train, supervise and evaluate summer staff and oversee the provision of services to summer school residents, conference guests and/or summer programs

h. Supervise summer Hall Managers or conference assistants in completing duties related to summer conference programs

QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
A bachelor's degree and work experience in student services programs is required. Experience and training in student services or student development programs is requested.

PREFERRED IN ADDITION TO THE MINIMUM:
A master's degree in college student personnel, counseling or a related field.

PAY & WORK SCHEDULE:
Standard Hrs: 37.5; Band: 05 ($ 30,274.00 - $ 56,015.00)

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
The Community Director must possess extraordinary energy and patience and must be willing to work nights and unscheduled hours; must be capable of responding on behalf of the University to crisis situations with control and good judgement; and must be highly motivated and creative in approach to all aspects of their job.

GUIDELINES & SUPERVISION:
Supervision is provided by an Assistant Director through daily contact and weekly staff meeting, as well as additional meetings when necessary. A great deal of autonomy is expected of this position and the employee must be self-motivated and able to work independently within the recognized policies and procedures. High degree of confidentiality is required.
