SPECIFICS ABOUT THIS POSITION:
Under the general direction of the Director of Community Outreach and External Affairs, or approved designee, and in accordance with established procedures, the In-House Coordinator (IHC) is responsible for promoting and facilitating organ, tissue and eye donation throughout the hospital(s) and support the department as needed. By conducting on-going marketing research, the IHC will build a knowledge base of the hospital’s donor potential, people, functions and processes. The In-House Coordinator is also responsible for coordinating pastoral care/social work and/or The Infinite Legacy Family Services staff to allow for optimum family support and assistance in obtaining written authorization for organ and/or tissue donation. The IHC will develop strong working relationships with key hospital clients, determine client needs relative to the donor process, and develop and implement strategies and action plans to maximize donation. Strategies and plans will be developed in collaboration with support from organ recovery, tissue recovery, and ILF staff. The In-House Coordinator will be responsible for building and maintaining relationships with the University of Maryland Medical System.ADDITIONAL JOB SUMMARY:

1. Performs/coordinates daily weekday rounds in all critical care units and the Emergency Department to assure all suitable patients are referred in a timely manner.
2. Responds on site and provides assistance with potential donors and their families to ensure organ and tissue donation protocols are consistently followed. This includes but is not limited to: assuring timely and correct declaration of patient, facilitating communication between medical staff/ family and The Infinite Legacy Foundation, and coordination of the OR for suitable recovery time.
3. Assists Infinite Legacy clinical staff in the collection of pertinent patient medical information. Maintains electronic medical record process with the ILF staff as needed.
4. Provides timely follow up and outcome of donation cases to appropriate Infinite Legacy and UMMC hospital staff for each case, including recognition of key hospital staff.
5. Coordinates with pastoral care, social work and/or Infinite Legacy staff to maintain optimum family support before, during and after the discussion of donation.
6. Facilitates appropriate and timely communication of information between medical staff and family, in conjunction with ILF staff. Partners with UMMS IHC to provide consistent coverage for appropriate hospitals.
7. Develops and maintains strategic marketing plan for the hospitals containing a complete assessment and analysis of hospital information.
8. Responsible for the development and implementation of educational needs for clients utilizing clinical, family services and community outreach resources.
9. Conducts routine medical record and flagged referral reviews for all units to assess donor potential and evaluate timely referral of all potential donors.
10. Routinely compiles, analyzes, and reports data and information on hospitals’ donation performance per appropriate protocols.
11. Maintains accurate documentation of regulatory data points, activity/rounding, and outcome of medical record reviews in accordance with departmental goals.
12. Maintains and creates Memorandum of Understandings (MOUs), Organ and Tissue donation policies, DCD policies, HIPAA Documentation, and special event materials. Responsible for maintaining current files of each hospitals’ brain death policies, withdraw of support policies, and any relevant hospital policies. Responsible for making sure each of the above policies meet the clinical needs of the organization and current policies are uploaded to the HS module.
13. Participates on appropriate hospital wide committees to review case process and outcomes, recruits key hospital personnel to serve as donor program champions, and advises on policy and procedures while providing regular feedback to all parties.
14. Develops and supports public awareness and education opportunities in collaboration with The Infinite Legacy Foundation’s Community Outreach department.
15. Provides on-call coverage for hospitals located in ILF’s Donation Service Area as needed.
16. Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s Degree in nursing or social work required.
- Two (2) years’ experience working in an OPO, critical care nursing, or social work/palliative care field required. Healthcare experience with physician relations preferred.
