Shangri-La Construction is seeking a Project Accountant to join our team at our Los Angeles Headquarters to oversee the financial aspects of assigned construction projects.

Shangri-La Construction (SLC) was formed 15 years ago by principals with considerable experience in the ownership and operation of real estate to address the typical shortcomings experienced in the industry. SLC is a top-rated commercial general contractor focused on multi-family residential and hospitality projects throughout Southern California. Reports To: Accounting Manager

Works With: Controller, Senior Accounting Manager, Chief Financial Officer, Executives, Managers, and Field Staff

POSITION SUMMARY
The Project Accountant is responsible for overseeing the financial aspects of assigned construction projects. This includes monitoring cash flow, tracking expenditures, reconciling accounts, and producing financial reports.
They are responsible for maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of project budgets, expenses, and revenue. They ensure that proper accounting and financial controls are in place, and ensure compliance with corporate, legal, and regulatory requirements. The Project Accountant is responsible for preparing financial reports and presentations for project stakeholders, including clients and senior management.

KEY DUTIES

  • Maintain and manage accounts receivable and accounts payable per assigned project.
  • Organize and prepare monthly draw submissions and accounts payable reports.
  • Review accuracy of billings and all appropriate documentation (lien waivers, certifications, etc.).
  • Prepare and distribute lien waivers.
  • Collect conditional and unconditional lien waivers from vendors.
  • Track project expenses, monitor project budgets, and ensure that expenses are properly recorded and allocated.
  • Ensure invoices are accurately prepared and submitted promptly, and follow up on collections.
  • Analyze project financial data to identify trends and potential issues and make recommendations to improve project profitability.
  • Identify and manage financial risks and develop contingency plans to minimize potential losses.
  • Ensure all financial aspects of projects follow company policies and procedures, as well as industry regulations and accounting standards.
  • Negotiate contracts and manage relationships with contractors, vendors, and suppliers.
  • Communicate project financial information to stakeholders, including project managers, engineers, and clients.
  • Assist managers or other staff with their daily functions to ensure department goals are achieved and staff is notified of important information.

SKILLS & EXPERTISE

  • A strong understanding of accounting principles, financial statements, and budgeting.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records and to keep track of multiple project budgets.
  • Ability to analyze complex financial information and make informed decisions to resolve issues and minimize risks.
  • Ability to anticipate potential financial issues, and to develop plans to address them.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in project requirements, budget, and timelines.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines.
  • An understanding of the AEC industry (specifically general contracting, subtrades, or development) including industry-standard cost codes/job costing.
  • Ability to setup AIA formatted pay applications within the accounting system
  • Experience interfacing with vendors.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, to create reports, analyze data, and present information.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and financial management tools including Sage 300, Procore, and Textura.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field required.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) certification desired.

EXPERIENCE

  • 2+ years relevant work experience in in accounting, finance, or a related field required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The position primarily includes work in an office atmosphere with periods of work outdoor. Performance of the duties requires the physical ability to sit for long periods at a desk frequently; stand, walk, and climb stairs; continuously verbally communicate; view information using close and peripheral vision and depth perception with the ability to adjust focus; repetitively use hands to keyboard and operate office productivity machinery. The position occasionally requires stooping, kneeling, and lifting to 25 pounds. The noise level in the environment is usually moderate.
